The Importance of Chemical Products In Oil and Gas Operations

Posted by Bianca Arizmendi on Oct 21st 2026

Chemical products play an essential role in protecting equipment, filtering contaminants, and improving efficiency in oil and gas processing and production.  From natural gas dehydration to scale prevention to corrosion control and foam management, the right chemical treatment can help address some of the most common challenges in oil and gas. Like operating in demanding conditions, high temperature and pressure, corrosive compounds and hydrocarbons can cause equipment damage and affect performance.

Chemical Products for Natural Gas Dehydration

One important application for chemical products is natural gas dehydration. Tri ethylene glycol (TEG) is commonly used for removal of water from natural gas.  Maintaining good glycol conditions is critical in the dehydration process.  Croft Supply offers PH-301 PH Control which helps balance glycol pH and reduce corrosion in natural gas dehydration systems. The product's intent is to raise glycol pH when it falls below 7 and create a protective film in the vapor areas of the glycol unit. Our Glycol Analysis Program helps you analyze the glycol heath of your dehydrator, provides lab analyzed samples, glycol analysis reports, and personal recommendations from our engineering team.

Controlling Foam in Glycol and Amine Systems

Foaming can create significant operational problems in natural gas treatment and dehydration equipment. Excessive foaming can interfere with proper gas-liquid contact, contribute to carryover, and reduce efficiency of the treating process. Our Defoamer is designed for systems that use amine for CO2 and H2S removal or glycol for natural gas dehydration. It is a polyglycol antifoam designed for recurring treatment of systems experiencing constant foaming.

Preventing and Managing Scales

Scales occur when mineral deposits accumulate on equipment and inside piping valves, injection systems, and other components. Over time, scale buildup can restrict flow, increase pressure, and reduce production efficiency.  Croft Supply SIP-100 Scale Inhibitor functions as a scale inhibition, scale remover, and sequestration.  Our scale inhibitors help operators reduce the impact of mineral deposits and maintain more reliable flow through production equipment. Acid Sticks and Acid Balls also contribute to mineral deposits and scales buildup, designed to dissolve and release active ingredients downhole to areas where deposits may be affecting flow.

Downhole Chemical Treatment

Croft Supply chemical products can also be used directly in producing and injection wells. Our S&B pellets are water-soluble acid inhibitor pellets designed to release acid downhole in water injection and producing wells. They are used to address carbonate scales and rust deposits without needing mechanical intervention. Foam Sticks help remove accumulated liquid and improve well production. When liquids build in a well, they create additional hydrostatic pressure, making it more difficult to produce efficiently.

Choosing the Right Chemical Product

Product selection should take into consideration the equipment, operating conditions, chemical compatibility, system volume, and follow applicable Safety Data Sheets (SDS). Proper chemical treatment is an important component of preventative maintenance as it can help operators manage corrosion, scale, foam, water, and other conditions that can negatively affect your equipment. Regular monitoring can identify changes in system conditions and determine when chemical treatment may be necessary.  Help restore production, improve efficiency, and keep your equipment running longer.
